Becoming a member

Many nonprofits offer membership — a formal relationship beyond a one-time donation, with annual dues and benefits.

Why join

Membership typically gets you:

  • Voting rights at annual meetings.
  • Newsletter with member-only content.
  • Event discounts or priority registration.
  • Recognition on the nonprofit's website (unless anonymous).
  • Early access to programs, scholarships, or initiatives.

The exact benefits depend on the nonprofit and the membership level.

Levels

Most nonprofits offer multiple levels — Bronze, Silver, Gold, or named tiers like "Founder" or "Patron":

  • Lower tiers: small annual dues, basic benefits.
  • Higher tiers: more dues, additional perks (event tickets included, listed in annual report, etc.).

The membership page shows each level with its benefits.

How to join

  1. Go to the nonprofit's website and click Join or Become a Member (often in the navigation).
  2. Choose a membership level.
  3. Fill in your name, email, address, phone.
  4. Pay your annual dues — credit/debit card via Stripe.
  5. (Optional) Opt in to the member newsletter, photo release, etc.

You'll receive a confirmation email with:

  • Your member number.
  • Receipt for your dues (often partially tax-deductible — see below).
  • A login link to claim your member account.

Auto-renew

Many nonprofits offer auto-renew (your dues charged each year automatically). You can opt in at signup and turn it off anytime later.

Renewing manually

If you didn't auto-renew, you'll get reminder emails:

  • 30 days before expiration.
  • 7 days before.
  • Day-of (last chance).

Click the link in any reminder to renew.

Member portal

Once joined, you can manage your membership at the nonprofit's /myconsole:

  • See your membership level and renewal date.
  • Update your profile.
  • Renew or cancel.
  • Access member-only content.

Tax deductibility

If your membership includes goods or services (e.g. a magazine subscription, an exclusive event), only the portion above the fair market value is deductible. The receipt will state this.

If your membership is purely a donation in support of the nonprofit (no goods exchanged), the full amount is deductible.

Canceling

Members can cancel from the portal:

  • Mid-year cancellation: typically no refund (you've used part of the year).
  • Just before renewal: turn off auto-renew so you're not charged again.

Common questions

Can I gift a membership? Many nonprofits allow this — look for "Give a membership" on the membership page, or contact the nonprofit.

Can my whole family be members? Some levels are individual; others (often called "Family" or "Household") cover multiple people at one address. Check the level descriptions.

Is membership the same as donating? No. Donations are one-off (or recurring) with no formal status; membership is a structured ongoing relationship with explicit benefits and dues.
